Drag as an aesthetic and political statement

Known for their drag king and queer performances — marked by their iconic mustaches — Moustache Queens have become a prominent presence in Belo Horizonte’s cultural scene, with sold-out shows and events like the Baile da Moustache at Casa Circo Gamarra. Founded in 2022 by Sam Rennó, Moustache Queens emerged as both an artistic experiment and a political gesture. The band brings together trans, cis, and non-binary artists who all perform wearing moustaches—playfully and boldly challenging conventional gender norms. Their sound moves freely between original songs and reimagined classics, blending electronic beats with live full band, ballroom acts in a fun cabaret atmosphere. Directed by Sam Rennó and Gabriel Nagao, the production is led by a team that is predominantly LGBTQIAP+ and non-white, reinforcing the project’s commitment to representation and diversity.

Don't you know that you're toxic?

Moustache Queens released in 2023 a striking reinterpretation of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” as part of a trilogy of pop reworks. The track blends Trap, Trip-Hop, and Maracatu, transforming the original into a performative piece that plays with contrasts between sensuality and discomfort. “Toxic” is part of a larger project that also includes reinterpretations of “Boyfriend” (Dove Cameron) and “Bad Guy” (Billie Eilish), combining pop structures with broader artistic influences and a strong queer aesthetic.

Paco, El Diablo

Within this universe, the creation of drag king personas plays a central role in expanding identity through performance. In my case, Paco emerges as an alter ego—a character built from gesture, attitude, voice, and presence. Paco interprets both the Devil and the Fool in Moutache's latest spectacle, inspired by archetypal figures from the classic tarot cards in a vibrant blend of music, performance, and symbolism. I invite you to join this immersive experience and try for yourself the delights of being who ever you want to be, even if just for one night! Follow @moustachequeens for more <3
